And yet, there is a vast quantity of nonsense talked about bad men not looking you in the face. So perhaps don't trust that convention entirely. Dishonesty will stare honesty out of countenance any day of the week, especially if there is anything to be got by it.
But as for one as bad as Bill Sikes, we must surely make an exception. One cannot imagine a more odious character. But then if there were no bad people there would be no good lawyers. Ah, the one great principle of English law is to make business for itself.
Do we think Nancy really loved Bill Sikes? Indeed, we all forge the chains we wear in life. But first, a question. Why would Nancy stay with a man like that? Was she dependent upon him? But to put up with the abuse and the beatings – ah, there is no reckoning the affairs of the heart. Perhaps one day women will be able to walk away from such men.
