From a personal point of view, it was interesting being back in Leeds after ****** so many years. Having spent my college years in the city it was interesting to see what was left of the city centre which I knew quite well, my main haunts being the central library and the Vic. Isn't it funny how libraries seem to have fewer books than back in the day. Leeds Central Library was able to have so many books on the shelf on the Irish Literary Revival (my subject at the time) that I was able to research and write a decent thesis. Unfortunately now would be a different story completely.
In the last month or so I've done a fair bit of library visiting in the north and in Belfast and this lack of books on the shelf seems to be a regular feature. Gone are the days when a young enquiring mind could get fed by browsing around library shelves crammed with books and information and of course stories to stir the imagination. End of old man's rant!
